| DESCRIPTION | This study-unit is suitable for students who have completed the study-units related to the Chinese Language (1 & 2) or who have the equivalent knowledge of these study-units. This study-unit is designed to consolidate overall listening and speaking proficiency, with the focus gradually moving towards semi-formal usage of Chinese language in topic-oriented discussions, as well as, be able to formulate more complex grammatical sentence structures and expand the vocabulary knowledge. Learners will also develop essential skills in using Chinese in some familiar complex real-life situations and be ready to go on to the next level. Study-Unit Aims: This study-unit aims to assist the students in: 1. Learning another 300 (or more) commonly used Chinese Characters; 2. Learning 500 (or more) words and phrases; 3. Understanding and using correctly Chinese grammar and sentence structures at near intermediate level; 4. Expressing oneself in more detail and engage in more complex conversations with native speakers; 5. Giving longer presentations using correct Chinese grammar and sentence structures; 6. Becoming further acquainted with aspects of Chinese culture and society related to the course materials; 7. Further consolidating the phonological knowledge of the Chinese language using materials provided in class Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: 1. recognize and write another 300 (or more) Chinese characters; 2. develop a further vocabulary of 400 (or more) words and frequently used phrases; 3. demonstrate an understanding of more Chinese etiquette and customs related to the course content; 4. effectively communicating in Chinese about course-related topics and comprehend information from longer presentations and more complex dialogues 2. Skills: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: 1. make a close reading of texts; 2. develop a greater attention to detail; 3. learn to dialogue better; 4. appreciate better other cultures. Main Text/s and any supplementary readings: 1. Liu, Xun. A New Practical Chinese Reader Vol. 2 & 3 (textbook & workbook). Beijing: Beijing Language and Culture University Press, 2010. These books can be found either at the University library or at the Confucius Institute library. More bibliography will be given in class as necessary. |
