TITLE Reading and Translating Chinese

DESCRIPTION This study-unit offers students the opportunity to translate Chinese-English and Chinese-English texts chosen from a wide range of materials, such as fiction, news reports, letters and advertisements. The students will use their knowledge of Chinese characters, vocabulary, grammar, syntax, and idioms to interpret and translate the text into English. Students will create a final portfolio that showcases the wide range of practice they receive throughout the term.

Study-unit Aims:

1. Help students develop tactics and strategies for precise yet flexible translation of various genres;
2. Aid the development of Chinese reading comprehension skills along with high-level English expression;
3. Develop students’ knowledge of the theories and methodologies related to translation studies, especially where they concern the Chinese-to-English relationship.

Learning Outcomes:

Knowledge & Understanding
By the end of the study-unit, the student will be able to:

• Discuss distinct translation methodologies;
• Make critical decisions with regards to their individual approach to translating a text;
• Demonstrate and deepen their cultural understanding of China and the Chinese language at large.

2 Skills
By the end of the study-unit, the student will be able to:

• Translate a variety of texts from Chinese into English and vice versa;
• Revise their translations based on critical and constructive feedback;
• Comment on their own translations via annotations, critical analysis, and through the application of theoretical and/or methodological frameworks in writing and class discussions.

Further recommended reading, handouts, and visual aids will be distributed in class.
More bibliography will be given in class as necessary.
