DESCRIPTION This study-unit is suitable for students who have completed the study-units Chinese Language 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5, or who have the equivalent knowledge of these latter study-units. This study-unit is designed to help students who have completed two years of Chinese to acquire pre- advanced knowledge of the language, to improve reading skills as well as to further develop their overall proficiency in speaking and writing through reading and discussion of a variety of topics related to Chinese contemporary society and culture.

Students will also be presented with language tasks such as reading easy current newspaper articles and stories; listening to short Chinese news on the radio, watching simple video clips or films, presenting short reports and writing summaries and opinions- all in Chinese.

Study-unit Aims:

This study-unit aims to assist students in:
1. learning a further 900 commonly used Chinese Characters;
2. learning another 2000 words of essential vocabulary;
3. understanding various topics, such as culture and current affairs, as related in Chinese sources;
4. holding conversations in Chinese on various topics of general interest in a pre-advanced level.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

1) recognize and correctly write another 900 Chinese characters;
2) develop a vocabulary of another 2000 compound words and frequently used phrases;
3) to master more advanced Chinese grammar, syntax and vocabulary.

2. Skills
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

1) make a close reading of texts;
2) develop a greater attention to detail;
3) learn to dialogue better;
4) appreciate better other cultures.
