DESCRIPTION This study-unit aims to provide the student with a broad look at the study of the Chinese language and its contextual usage. Many different topics will be discussed in class, such as the history of the Chinese language and the history of Chinese linguistics, an introduction to varieties of the Chinese language as well as Chinese syntax, sociolinguistics.

Study-unit Aims:

1. Discuss basic issues in Chinese linguistic theory and its history;
2. Provide students with the communication of Chinese linguistics and relevant disciplines.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

1. Identify and describe the main issues in Chinese linguistics;
2. Discuss and examine topics in the history of Chinese linguistics;
3. Understand and analyze the significance of diversity in the Chinese language and its long history.

2. Skills
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

1. Develop an interdisciplinary sensibility;
2. Formulate proper arguments in Chinese linguistics by integrating theoretical and historical knowledge.
