DESCRIPTION | This seminar-style study-unit offers students the opportunity to discuss in depth current trends and issues in Chinese literary history. Students will be expected to draw on their previous knowledge of China's modern history, key figures, and important ideological discourses in class discussions and assignments. Throughout this course, students will conduct literary analysis using a variety of methods and frameworks, including but not limited to, gender studies, comparative literature, translation theory, psychology, transculturation, etc. Study-unit Aims: - Present students with multiple analytical frameworks that form the foundation of Chinese literature studies; - Develop students' analytical skills with regards to identifying and examining the significance of major literary works throughout China's history. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Identify and discuss different cultural movements in China and beyond along with their impact on Chinese literature; - Understand and examine the ways that Chinese identity/identities is represented in literature, particularly when it is impacted by class, gender, politics, and region; - Identify and critically utilize analytical frameworks current in Chinese literature studies. 2. Skills By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Read and draw on theoretical and empirical scholarship in Chinese and English pertaining to the intersections of Chinese literature, culture, and history; - Conduct close readings of literary works, paying close attention to philological, symbolic, and contextual significance; - Form and share critical arguments via writing that incorporate close readings of literary texts and scholarly discourses. Further recommended reading, handouts, and visual aids will be distributed in class. |
