| DESCRIPTION | This study-unit is suitable for students who have completed the study-units related to Chinese Language (1, 2, 3 and 4), or who have the equivalent knowledge of these latter study-units. This study-unit is designed to further develop proficiency in speaking and writing through readings on and discussions of socio-cultural topics relevant to contemporary China. The main focus is on the improvement of reading, and on writing skills. The students should further improve oral skills by participating in semi-formal conversation with native speakers. Class discussion will be in Chinese, and Chinese culture will be dealt with in greater depth. Study-Unit Aims: This study-unit aims to assist students in: 1. learning a further 700 (or more) commonly used Chinese Characters; 2. learning another 1000 words of essential vocabulary; 3. acquiring the necessary knowledge of Chinese grammar and syntax necessary for holding semi-formal discussions on socio-cultural topics; 4. developing the necessary skills needed to understand the meaning of new words in the light of a textual and / or conversational context; 5. being acquainted with aspects of Chinese culture and society related to the course materials; 6. communicating with native speakers in speaking and writing on topics related to the course content;. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: 1. recognize and write correctly a further 700 (or more) Chinese characters; 2. develop a vocabulary of another 1000 words, as well as frequently used phrases and expressions;; 3. to increase the reading speed of texts which have a more advanced syntax; 4. demonstrate an understanding more Chinese etiquette and customs related to the course content; 5. accurately infer the correct information from extended conversations and discussions centered around specific topics 2. Skills: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: 1. make a close reading of texts; 2. develop a greater attention to detail; 3. learn to dialogue better; 4. appreciate better other cultures. Main Text/s and any supplementary readings: - Liu, Xun. A New Practical Chinese Reader Vol. 4 & 5 (textbook & workbook). Beijing: Beijing Language and Culture University Press, 2010. These books can be found either at the University library or at the Confucius Institute library. More bibliography will be given in class as necessary. |
