Study-Unit Description

Study-Unit Description

TITLE e-Learning Applications Development

LEVEL 03 - Years 2, 3, 4 in Modular Undergraduate Course

DEPARTMENT Computer Information Systems

DESCRIPTION Students will learn planning an eLearning system, modelling of learning processes required to support effective learning, identification of roles and specification of related activities.

Students will also learn standards and specifications for web-based e-Learning, how to make the Build or Buy decision, use of Open Source Systems for development: typical features, extending functionality through plug-ins, deployment, interoperability, documentation, extent of usage, software architecture, educational strategies to content production, support of standards, referential architecture, meta-data, information packages, students evaluations, students personal information, and graphical user interface.

Students would also be provided an exposure of different Learning Content Management Systems such as Moodle. The study- unit would also discuss in detail tools for the manager, tools for the instructor and tools for the student.

Study-unit Aims:

This study-unit is aimed at providing the student with a basis of understanding of eLearning systems, their principal features and how to develop such systems. eLearning systems provide a special challenge to IT professionals in that their development involves design of a learning strategy and framework in conjunction with specialized IS technologies.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Explain what eLearning systems are;
- Explain what the principal features of eLearning systems, the underlying components and their interaction;
- Explain how eLearning objectives can be developed into eLearning systems;
- Identify the principal stakeholders in an eLearning environment, their specific roles and typical activities;
- Identify what type of tools exist to help the manager, the instructor and the learner to design, develop and make good use of an eLearning application;
- Explain what open source eLearning systems have to offer, how to assess their suitability;
- Explain and describe what standards and specifications related to eLearning systems are, their principal elements and how they can be used to guide eLearning systems design, development and implementation;
- Report the importance of ease of use and careful Human Computer Interface design for effective use of an eLearning system.

2. Skills:
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Define the basic components of an eLearning system;
- Describe how the learning objectives of a course can be translated into learning objects using an eLearning system;
- Define areas of interoperability between an eLearning system/platform and other applications in order to extend functionality to that offered by third party systems;
- Provide advice on whether to develop an inhouse eLearning application, to buy a system from a vender or to use an open source system and customize;
- Describe the advantages/disadvantages of using an open source eLearning Package;
- Embed eLearning systems standards and specification into the design of a system;
- Maintain constant attention to Human Computer Interface design concepts throughout the design of an eLearning system in order to achieve effective learning.
