DESCRIPTION Texts from Iliad VI and Odyssey IX of Homer, and the Aeneid II of Vergil, which are briefly introduced, explained and translated in class.

Study-unit Aims

To familiarize students with Classical epic poetry - both Greek and Roman. To lead to an understanding of the metre and style which characterise this literary form. To become aware of the influence Greek epic has had on Roman epic, as well as the differences between the two in poetic purpose, intention, and perspective.

Learning Outcomes

1. Knowledge & Understanding:
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

Analyse and explain all the features of Greek and Latin epic poetry by close examination of selected texts from Homer and Vergil, compare and discuss the points of similarity and of contrast between Greek and Roman epic, both in terms of an analysis of language and style, as well as an explanation of the poem's inspiration, sources, intention, and poetic vision.

2. Skills:
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

Locate Greek and Roman epic poetry within its historical and societal contexts; relate on the continual presence of epic influences in subsequent literatures and cultures; relate on the persistent representation of classical epic in modern forms of art.
