DESCRIPTION This unit analyses the prosody and metres of Greek and Roman poets, and the rhetorical theory developed by Aristotle, Longinus, Cicero, Horace, Tacitus and Quintilian, illustrated by passages taken from Greek and Latin orations and treatises.

Study-unit Aims

This unit is meant to help students identify and describe all metres used by the Greeks and the Romans, and all techniques used by Greek and Roman orators and writers in their art of persuasion.

Learning Outcomes

1. Knowledge & Understanding:
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

1. Identify metres from others and relate them to their contexts;
2. Identify methods of persuasion in speeches and other literary works.

2. Skills:
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

1. Describe metres;
2. Ilustrate metres;
3. Relate metres to their contexts;
4. Translate passages from Greek and Latin speeches;
5. Interpret passages from Greek and Latin speeches;
6. Relate on Greek and Roman orators.
