DESCRIPTION This unit is meant to help the student penetrate into the mystery of myth creation and tradition, analyzing theoretical assessment, as well as literary evidence. Topics discussed will include various definitions and interpretations of what is mythology, what is special with Greek mythology, the common episodes which Greek mythology shares with Hurrian, Babylonian and Hebrew myths, the historical sagas, and the relationship of myth with religion, particularly with the concept of fertility.

Aims:

To give students an overview of some of the major concepts underlying the mythology of Ancient Greece, from both the literary and theoretical viewpoints;
To explore common affinities between Greek and other ancient mythologies;
To describe inherent relationships between mythology and religion.

Outcomes:

To report on the chief aspects in the study of Ancient Greek mythology;
To demonstrate the major interlinkages between Greek and other ancient mythologies;
To explain the mutual influences between ancient mythology and religion.
