DESCRIPTION A theme developed by the student through personal reading and research under the regular guidance of a member of the Department. The choice of the theme requires the approval of the Head of Department after consultation with the Board of Studies.

It is up to the tutor and Head of Department to make sure that the level of the unit reflects the credit value attached.

An ad hoc Board of Examiners will be set up depending on the nature of the study completed.

Study-unit Aims:

The directed study-unit is intended to train students in the following:
- To use critically secondary sources in the formulation of a literature review.
- To evaluate critically the secondary sources in light of the primary evidence for a set theme.
- Gain knowledge of an area pertinent to the theme being researched as part of the MA(Research) for which no previous training was obtained.
- To write a sustained piece of work, according to the established criteria of academic writing.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- Gain a solid critical overview of the primary and secondary sources pertinent to their chosen topic.
- Gain a solid grasp of the skills pertinent to a research field or application, etc.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will:
- Be more creative and critical in thinking out various problems;
- Be able to write more clearly and precisely in jargon free language;
- Feel more at ease in writing an academic piece of work and in coming up with their own original perspectives.

There is no fixed reading list. The texts/readings depend on the theme/topic chosen by the student.

 
ADDITIONAL NOTES This study-unit can be followed by students following the M.A. programme only.
