TITLE Gender and Labour Economics

UM LEVEL 01 - Year 1 in Modular Undergraduate Course

MQF LEVEL 5

ECTS CREDITS 4

DEPARTMENT Centre for Labour Studies

DESCRIPTION This study-unit looks at gender and its impact on the labour market. It studies the interaction of employees and employers. The field of labour economics covers the demand for and supply of labour services. The microeconomic perspective features the individuals and firms in the labour market, while the macroeconomic view looks at the relationships of the different markets which influence income, employment and unemployment levels and also participation rates.

During this study-unit special attention will be given to gender issues and the effect of policies to increase the participation rate.

It also uses game theory to consider the role of unions, labour market equilibrium and differences in wages. The Phillips curve will introduce students to the link between inflation and unemployment. Taxation and social security policies also influence labour markets, while active labour market policies can affect different types of unemployment. The unit also considers the role of globalisation and international labour markets on national markets.
