The unit aims to facilitate the manner in which environmental health can be protected and fostered in society, with particular reference to the workplace.

Study-Unit Aims:

The study-unit aims to:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- Discuss the assessment of, and the relation of the following environmental issues to occupational health and safety measures: land use planning; emissions; environmentally induced conditions, vectors, pests, chemical contaminants and nuisance noise; water, pools, cooling systems and flooding; industrial solid and liquid wastes; industrial boundaries and visual environment; transport, spills and disasters; and trans-boundary pollution: the six major chemicals of concern; food safety and sanitation; the effects of atmospheric conditions on health & safety, meteorology, ambient and indoor air.
- Evaluate elements of the principles of environmental economics and their relation with sustainability and their impact on health and safety during a final assessment and class discussion.
- Identify and discuss during a final assessment relevant environmental aspects of health and safety policies, and the interrelation between environmental health policy, legislation and regulation with health and safety and public health. Participants should thus be able to identify and evaluate relevant policies, action plans and international co-operation (EU and WHO), the scope of ISO standards in Environmental Health Management systems, the National Radiation Structure Plans (NERSP), and the Euratom treaty articles 35 and 36.
