TITLE Health and Safety Management and Supervisory Skills

UM LEVEL 02 - Years 2, 3 in Modular Undergraduate Course

MQF LEVEL 5

ECTS CREDITS 6

DEPARTMENT Centre for Labour Studies

DESCRIPTION As health and safety practitioners and safety representatives are likely to be called upon to involve themselves in the formulation and implementation of OHS policy at their place of work, this unit first introduces participants to the features of such a role and its associated skills and competencies. The unit then tackles international standardised health and safety management systems relevant for small, medium as well as large organisations.

Study-Unit Aims:

The study-unit initially aims to introduce students to the basic features of a OHS supervisory role and its associated skills and competencies. It then aims to build on these features and present health and safety management, including international standardised systems, in a comprehensive manner. Finally, the unit aims to demonstrate the relationship between health and safety management systems and the different roles of occupational health and safety.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- State and evaluate the theory underpinning important supervisory skills during a final case study including: receiving information and ensuring its accurate interpretation; providing appropriate information to individuals and groups; establishing mechanisms for effectiveness and delivery; collaborating with trade unions, external experts and other actors; establishing and collaborating with safety representatives and safety committees.
- Discuss the effects of supervision and related leadership principles including: working in teams, group make up, negotiation skills, and competence.
- State and critically analyse during a final assessment, the contents and development of: health and safety policy documents; health and safety vigilance programmes; promoting change and change interventions; continuous education and training interventions; health and safety insurance.
