DESCRIPTION This clinical placement experience is designed in the form of guided fieldwork to enable students to apply the theoretical knowledge to the clinical situation in relation to the assessment and diagnosis of congenital and acquired hearing impairment and other related impairments such as auditory processing disorder. A practical component of this nature will require supervision and tutorials throughout the placement.

Assessment will be held on site to gain an insight into the students’ theoretical knowledge and its application to this discipline.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
• Relate theoretical knowledge to clinical audiological settings (using appropriate terms).
• develop structured observation skills and enhance active listening and empathic skills;
• gain an insight into the impact that a difficulty in hearing leaves on an individual and the environment;
• gain a holistic view of the nature of hearing impairment;
• collect and record relevant information related to assessment (case history taking) and data from other sources;
• identify relevant routes for further assessment including referral to other professionals;
• relate learning of new material to past observations, experience and knowledge;
• identify and describe different types and degrees of hearing impairment;
• develop professional skills including report writing;
• develop an awareness of ethical issues in connection with the management of a diagnostic clinic.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
• administer and interpret results of basic audiological tests;
• consider hearing acuity in the differential diagnosis of communication difficulties;
• manage the clients’ behaviour while being rigorous and flexible;
• interact with children, adult clients and carers according to individual needs;
• work in a team with other student colleagues and other professionals;
• take responsibility for professional actions and outcomes (accountability);
• acquire skills to relate and communicate effectively with the hearing impaired individuals and their carers;
• gain skills in behavioural management;
• acquire skills in administering and evaluating audiological assessments.
