DESCRIPTION The placement experience is designed to enable students to:
• Plan appropriate assessment and management backed up by clear rationales;
• Carry out a range of assessment and intervention procedures;
• Discuss with others (supervising clinician and student colleagues) the planning and carrying out of intervention procedures;
• Develop an understanding and appropriate application of alternative and augmentative means of communication modes;
• Maintain relevant records;
• Develop skills in self-evaluation and time management;
• Develop an understanding of the need to work within professional ethics, moral issues and standards of the employing agency;
• Demonstrate appropriate attendance, punctuality, dress etc.

Study-unit Aims:

Building on the second year experience, students are expected to take the initiative in participating actively with guidance from the clinical supervisor.

Throughout the placement the students may be given opportunities to act with increasing independence in clinical assessment, intervention and evaluation. At this stage students are better prepared in knowledge and skills for various client groups and so should be carrying out the above more independently although clinical educators should provide the students with opportunities for self evaluation and feedback on the development of their skills.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
• Identify long and short term goals of intervention;
• Apply their theoretical knowledge to identify rationales for assessment and therapy goals.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
• Carry out methods of gathering information including case history taking, assessments, linguistic analysis etc;
• Interpret this information with guidance from the clinician;
• Devise and carry out activities to target goals identified in conjunction with the clinician;
• Participate in record keeping, report writing and routine clinical administration;
• Report and discuss therapy programmes with clients and carers;
• Identify own strengths and weaknesses with guidance from the clinician if necessary;
• Evaluate the effectiveness of the specific strategy/approach.

There are no set texts for this study-unit. Recommended readings vary according to clinical placement setting and type of caseload.
