DEPARTMENT Communication Therapy

DESCRIPTION Students are expected to integrate theoretical understanding, knowledge and skills by presenting a manuscript of the communication profile of a client that they would have been following during their clinical placement (CMT4311).

Study-unit Aims:

The case file should be well structured with relevant information according to a specific client’s communication skills and needs. Clear aims and objectives backed up by appropriate rationales including supporting references need to be included in the manuscript. Discussion demonstrating analysis of findings as well as a conclusion based firmly on findings and on relevant theory should also be attempted. Effectiveness of therapy/progress should be reported indicating objective measurement.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Prepare a portfolio that gives a detailed account of an intervention programme designed to address the communication strengths and weaknesses of a specific client.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Evaluate the client's communication skills and identify areas requiring intervention;
- Reach a tentative differential diagnosis on the basis of assessment findings;
- Plan and implement therapy sessions that aim to minimise the client's communication deficits while building on his strengths;
- Consider relevant prognostic factors.
