DESCRIPTION This practical unit provides students with their final clinical placement prior to completion of the study-unit. It builds on the clinical experience of Year 3 (CMT3312). The practical study-unit gives students the opportunity to:

• Relate theoretical knowledge to clinical cases using appropriate terms;
• Observe, record and analyse clients’ communication skills;
• Select, administer and interpret results of assessments;
• Reach a differential diagnosis;
• Plan and carry out appropriate and enjoyable intervention sessions;
• Manage clients’ behaviour while being rigorous and flexible;
• Interact with children, adult clients and carers according to individual needs;
• Write reports, including those to other professionals;
• Work in a team with student colleagues, speech-language pathologists and other professionals;
• Carry out routine clinical administration;
• Evaluate own and student colleagues’ performance during sessions;
• Demonstrate appropriate attendance, punctuality and dress;
• Take responsibility for professional actions and outcomes.

Study-unit Aims:

This study-unit aims to show students how to assess, differentiate and manage more complex communication disorders and to effectively relate theory to practice.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Relate existing theoretical knowledge to clients’ needs and actively seek out information which has not been provided;
- Reach a differential diagnosis based on accurate analysis of assessment findings in relation to theory.

2. Skills:
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Observe, record and evaluate clients’ performance during sessions;
- Select, administer and interpret results of assessments;
- Plan therapy sessions, using appropriate and enjoyable tasks and materials;
- Administer session plans and therapy activities;
- Remain in control during sessions and demonstrate flexibility where needed;
- Carry out different types of sessions as required at the various stages of intervention e.g. initial interview, review session;
- Adapt behaviour to suit various intervention settings e.g. home visits, school visits and hospital ward sessions;
- Write up client case notes;
- Carry out routine administration required for running of the clinic e.g. sending appointments, locating records;
- Write reports to other professionals;
- Manage a caseload and prioritise clients;
- Manage own time effectively;
- Interact with children and adults, varying communication style to suit individual clients;
- Interact with parents/carers to gather information and provide support;
- Work in a team with other students, speech - language pathologists and other professionals including consultants and teachers;
- Discuss cases with other students and speech - language pathologists using appropriate professional terms;
- Contribute to multidisciplinary meetings and case conferences;
- Evaluate and report on own performance during a session;
- Evaluate and provide feedback on other students’ and speech-language pathologists’ performance;
- Acknowledge own limitations, e.g. identifying instances that require deeper professional knowledge;
- Apply independent problem solving skills to the investigation, management and evaluation of cases;
- Demonstrate appropriate attendance, punctuality, dress, etc.;
- Adopt the role of a professional in terms of confidentiality, responsibility, etc.;
- Demonstrate awareness of wider issues affecting the profession e.g. policies.
