DESCRIPTION The student will select a real-life based construction management issue following consultation with an appointed tutor and an employer/construction industry operator define the research problem, and devise an appropriate research approach.

The findings of the research exercise will be presented in written form and in an oral presentation.

Study-unit Aims

The aim of the study-unit is to introduce the student to the application of academic scholarship to the real life problems faced in the construction industry. The aim of this study-unit is to give the students an opportunity to undertake research on a live case, which will allow the student to demonstrate competency in planning a piece of adequately focused research, with a research plan that is suitable for the task in hand, undertake data gathering and background reading / research to the assigned task, analyse and discuss the findings and draw up a report for senior executives.

Learning Outcomes

1. Knowledge & Understanding:
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

The student will identify a subject or area of work to formulate a project, for which they will accept ownership. The project will focus on organizational issues and enable the student to develop and enhance their skills such as diagnosis, analysis, developing strategies to address problems etc. The project will be within the student’s own role or scope and be of a level of complexity that is equal to, or more, than their level of responsibility.

2. Skills:
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

1. Identify and critically appraise an existing work life situation;
2. Define a project remit;
3. Design a project plan;
4. Execute a project plan;
5. Collate relevant data;
6. Analyse and discuss collated data with reference to a project's term of reference;
7. Present conclusions and recommendations emanating from a small research exercise.
