DESCRIPTION | This study-unit is an introductory study-unit, introducing students to the foundation knowledge of professionalism and professional development, focusing on professional image, communication skills including listening, empathy giving feedback, teamwork in health care and personal growth in continual professional development. Study-unit Aims: The objectives of this study-unit is to: - Provide the student the theoretical background for basic communication skills; - Provide the student with a thorough understanding of different models of communication; - Providing the student the necessary communication skills in clinical practice; - Providing the student the necessary techniques that will help them cope with challenging situations in their personal and professional lives. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Discuss basic communication theory; - Discuss the three basic tenets of empathy, congruence and unconditional positive regard; - Discuss the skills of basic empathy, pacing, probing, advanced accurate empathy challenging, giving feedback and immediacy; - Discuss ethical and professional issues around communicating with patients. 2. Skills: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Practice basic communication skills including pacing, basic empathy, probing, advanced accurate empathy, challenging and giving feedback; - Apply professional communication skills, having the ability to describe the concepts of oral health, and general well being; - Communicate effectively with the patient and professionals in the dental team; - Explore theoretical knowledge through further reading and research; - Foster the integration of knowledge and theory into dental surgery assistance; - Maintain appropriate boundaries with patients and professionals in the dental team.
