DESCRIPTION The purpose of this study-unit is to provide a comprehensive overview of the major theories in counselling supervision practice. It will draw on a range of contemporary research, with a focus on face-to-face and group counselling. Online practices will also be covered. This unit will combine experiential and theoretical approaches.

Participants will be introduced to current issues and trends including all of the following:
1. The role of the counselling supervisor in different settings;
2. Knowledge and critique of theoretical models of individual supervision, including online supervision;
3. Theories of learning and educational principles that inform counselling supervision;
4. Understanding of preferred learning profiles;
5. Supervision skills and how online practices differ from face-to-face supervision.

Study-unit Aims:

This study unit aims to:

• Introduce students to the theory and practice of individual counselling supervision;
• Introduce the ethical purpose and functions of counselling supervision; including in online supervision, according to national and international research-based best practice;
• Introduce and develop the theory and practice of working with cultural difference in individual counselling supervision.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- demonstrate an extensive and critical understanding of theoretical models of supervision and reflective practice, including online applications;
- critically evaluate the ethical purpose, functions and role of individual supervision;
- examine the application of learning theory and personal profiles to individual supervision;
- discuss and critique similarities and differences between on-line and face-to-face supervision.

2. Skills:
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- demonstrate self-awareness in the role of the counselling supervisor;
- recognise and apply the ethical purpose, principles and requirements of counselling supervision;
- compare and contrast reflective practice theories in relation to face-to-face and online supervision practice;
- identify different learning profiles in supervisees and establish an optimal balance between support and challenge;
- appraise the supervisee’s strengths and weaknesses through their ongoing participation in the supervision process;
- demonstrate the ability to work with cultural difference in individual counselling supervision;
- collaborate with and enable supervisees to set their own learning objectives according to their work setting and theoretical orientation.
