|DESCRIPTION||This study-unit will introduce relevant terminology in pharmacology of drugs encountered in podiatry. It will include an understanding of aspects of prescription writing; methods, modes of administration of drugs, mode of action, interactions, side effects, of systemic drugs as pertinent to podiatry.
This study-unit will:
- introduce relevant terminology in pharmacology of drugs encountered in podiatry.
- an understanding of aspects of prescription writing in podiatry.
- Understand methods, modes of administration of drugs, mode of action, of systemic drugs which are pertinent in the practice of podiatry
- An explanation of the interactions, side effects, of systemic drugs encountered in the practise podiatry.
1. Knowledge & Understanding
By the end of this study-unit, the student will be able to understand:
- Modes of action of drugs and drug formulations
- Principles of pharmacokinetics, therapeutic drug monitoring and clinical trials
- Modes of drug administration, compliance and legal aspects of drug use
- Adverse drug reactions and drug interactions
- Analgesics I
- Analgesics II
- Cardiovascular agents I
- Cardiovascular agents II
- Anaesthetic agents
- Antiinflammatory agents eg steriods, antihistamines, immunosupressants
- Antidiabetic agents
- Various drugs acting on CNS eg medical emergencies, seizures, dementia
- Hypnotics and sedatives
- Antimicrobial skin preparations I
- Antimicrobial skin preparations II and disinfectants
- Other skin preparations eg eczema, psoriasis, antipruritics, barrier preparations, warts calluses
- Wound management and dressings
- Drug abuse and dependence, toxicology and poisoning
- Drugs in special populations in podiatry
By the end of this study-unit, the student will be able to:
- Apply knowledge of the molecular mode of action of drugs to specific clinical scenarios in podiatry;
- Apply basic pharmacological and pharmacokinetic principles in prescribing decisions in podiatry;
- Predict interpatient variability with respect to drug response in podiatry;
- Explain the selection of differing drug therapies for the individual patient encountered in podiatry
