| DESCRIPTION | This study-unit provides an in-depth exploration of building regulations and their critical role in the construction industry. It covers the legal, technical, and practical aspects of regulatory compliance, focusing on national and European standards. Topics include health and safety requirements, environmental sustainability, accessibility, fire safety, and structural stability. Through case studies and practical applications, students will learn to interpret, apply, and ensure compliance with building regulations, preparing them for professional responsibilities in construction management. Study-unit Aims: This study-unit aims to provide students with an in-depth knowledge of building laws, their objectives, and their implementation in the construction sector. The unit will include national and European construction regulations, building codes, health and safety requirements, environmental sustainability factors, accessibility criteria, and compliance procedures. Students will acquire the requisite knowledge and abilities to understand, implement, and ensure compliance with building rules in practical real-world construction projects. Students will analyse the impact of non-compliance to standards and regulations and the risks that pertain to failing to adhere. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Explain the fundamental principles and objectives of building regulations and their role in ensuring safety, sustainability, and accessibility in construction; - Identify and interpret key national and European building codes and standards applicable to the construction industry; - Assess the legal and regulatory framework governing construction projects in Malta, including compliance procedures and enforcement mechanisms; - Evaluate health and safety regulations and their implementation in construction site management; - Understand the principles of fire safety, structural stability, energy efficiency, and environmental sustainability in relation to building regulations. 2. Skills By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Gain project management competencies in ensuring adherence to building regulations throughout project lifecycles.
