DESCRIPTION This study-unit provides a general introduction to police leadership and management. It aims to enhance understanding of decision making within the context of policing. It covers areas of police leadership and touches on HR principles, supervision and organization behavioral concepts. The function of the executive police organizations in our society is analyzed in the context of democracy. The impact of various theoretical and practical models will be explored to build an analytical approach that will serve for understanding how policing issues emerge. The purpose of this study-unit is also to understand how looking ahead and planning strategically are major thrusts in police leadership.

Study-unit Aims:

- Introduce students to the basic principles of police leadership and management;
- Examine various management strategies and plan solutions based on these strategies;
- Pose links between management theory and criminological research for better understanding of leadership strategies.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- Explain how police fit both in and out of the criminal justice system;
- Describe the strategic method to analyse a police organisation;
- Make a critique of the internal and external environments;
- Describe the economics of policing and how different trends affect management;
- List a spectrum of policing strategies and employ methods for defining these strategies.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- Identify policing strategies;
- Develop policing strategies;
- Analyze a police organisation from a strategic perspective;
- Create a set of police objectives;
- Adopt contingency planning to argue a strategic plan for police organizations.
