DESCRIPTION This study-unit will address a range of ethical and human rights issues encountered in the criminal justice process. It is subdivided in three main parts: the first part will consider the relevance of ethics to criminal justice, while providing an overview of various ethical theories and a discussion of the virtue of justice and the scope of punishment; the second part will attempt to apply these ethical theories to particular issues in criminal justice, including international criminal justice; while the third part will provide students with the occasion to discuss ethical issues faced by the medical profession in the administration of criminal justice.

Study-unit Aims:

The aims of this study-unit is to make students aware of the ethical and human rights issues that surround the criminal justice process while exposing them to ethical theories.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
1. Appreciate the relevance of ethics to criminal justice,
2. Apply ethical theories to particular circumstances in criminal justice
.
2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
1. Become aware of the importance and relevance of ethics to criminal justice,
2.Gain the necessary skills of observation and analysis in the criminal justice process,
3. Apply ethical theories to practice,
4. Discuss morally and ethically particular scenarios.
