| DESCRIPTION | Natural language processing is concerned with the application of computational techniques to human language. The main practical applications include spelling and style correction, text analytics, automatic keyword identification, automatic summarization, machine translation, etc. The study-unit aims to present students practical skills to enable them to understand and develop such applications. Learning Outcomes: basic knowledge of human language and linguistic concepts, knowledge of the different components of NL systems (tokenisation, parts-of-speech tagging, noun-phrase chunking, parsing algorithms) and of available NL toolkits. These outcomes will be assessed mainly by examination. Skills: students will also learn how to link core components together to form applications. For this purpose students will learn how to use various toolkits (e.g. NLTK) and APIs (e.g. Lingpipe). The Assignment will involve the development of such an application. Textbooks: • D.
