Study-Unit Description

CODE CVE5691

TITLE Introduction to the Eurocodes

UM LEVEL 05 - Postgraduate Modular Diploma or Degree Course

MQF LEVEL 7

ECTS CREDITS 5

DEPARTMENT Civil and Structural Engineering

DESCRIPTION EN1990 and EN1991 form part of the common core of the Eurocode suite. The study-unit will address the philosophy that is adopted by the Eurocodes, namely limit state design, the application of partial safety factors, reliability analysis, and the basis of design used throughout the Eurocode suite. The study-unit will also introduce the approach of the Eurocodes towards the determination of actions on structures, particularly as far as concerns wind and other environmental actions, and highway loads.

Study-unit Aims:

The objective of the study-unit will be to familiarize candidates with the Eurocode suite, introducing limit state philosophy, the nomenclature and design approach adopted in the Eurocodes; and make candidates aware of the codification proposed Europe-wide, as far as concerns structural design.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- understand the application of limit-state theory to the design of structures;
- understand the use of safety factors and combination coefficients;
- understand the basis of design to a specific design life;
- understand the basis of the Eurocode suite of design standards.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- apply the appropriate actions to be used in the design of structures;
- apply the appropriate partial safety factors and combination coefficients to the design of structures;
- use the appropriate NDP documents.
