TITLE Safeguarding Children’s Rights and Legal Aspects

DESCRIPTION The study-unit will share basic information about children rights and the legal responsibilities of persons working with children. It will draw together domestic, regional and international legal provisions relating to safeguarding children with reference to cases and judgments. The use of practical examples will serve to illustrate how theory and legal obligations may be applied in the daily routine of persons who work with children.

Study-unit Aims:

The study-unit aims to inform and prepare students to appreciate the responsibilities of safeguarding, engage in the formulation and application of necessary policies and better identify situations that require intervention while supporting them to provide an appropriate and timely response.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

(a) describe and discuss the fundamentals of the law relating to children, safeguarding and child protection;
(b) explain the importance of safeguarding for children and for the community;
(c) identify appropriate policies to ensure the wellbeing of children and situations which require reporting at law.

2. Skills
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

(a) implement theoretical knowledge and translate it into practical application;
(b) demonstrate an understanding of the responsibilities of persons entrusted with caring for children;
(c) choose policies focused on safeguarding children and implement them.
