DESCRIPTION This study-unit will enable students to look at the services provided to disabled people and their families through the lens of person-centred and family-oriented planning. The study-unit will start with an overview of services provided in Malta, drawing on what the students know and their experiences of working in these services. The concepts and principles underlying person-centred and family-oriented services will then be introduced.

The study-unit will then look in detail at services covering the following life domains: health, family life, education, work, the voluntary sector, and leisure.

Study-Unit Aims:

- To introduce students to the concepts and principles of person-centred and family-oriented service provision.
- To discuss the services available in Malta that support disabled people and their families in various life domains.
- To enable students to evaluate the extent to which these services are person-centred and family-oriented.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- To outline the services available in Malta that support disabled people and their families;
- To discuss the concepts and principles of person-centred and family-oriented service provision;
- To outline the various life domains and describe the services associated with each domain.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Evaluate current service provision within a person-centred and family-oriented framework;
- Apply this framework to one's own professional practice;
- Make recommendations regarding how current service provision can be better informed by this framework.
