| DESCRIPTION | This study-unit focuses on study of ways in which dance artists, teachers and researchers employ technology to support performance practices, inspire experimental choreography and create dance resources. The content includes: investigation of relationships between body, choreography and technology; techniques for shooting and editing material; consideration of live and recorded dance; classification and purpose/function; shifts of perspectives – designing space; fixed and moving camera; the mediated body; virtual reality/cyber dance; sketch book aids (e.g. Life Forms); interactivity; projection in performance; Net specific art work – hypermedia We investigate: - current practitioners engaged in merging technology and dance-making, and interrogate creative processes and outcomes - critical evaluation of software used by teachers and researchers in the field through exploration of software already in use and that which appears on the market - roles of choreographer, performers and audience - writings/critical discussions on experimental dance and performance Study-unit Aims - To extend knowledge of and categorise current approaches in the merging of dance and technology to extend the boundaries of dance choreography and performance. - To develop strategies for understanding, exploration and critical appraisal of the outcomes of such experiments. - To interrogate software packages used by researchers/artists/teachers to learn about the processes involved and to use this information to evaluate outcomes in different contexts – theatre, installations, resources, on the web, in cyberspaces. - Demonstrate increasing knowledge about such work through study of and participation in discussions through email (dance and technology zone), study of literature, participation as audience members and/or visits to web sites. - Debate issues relating to changes in concepts of dance making in cases where technology creates virtual bodies, spaces, choreographic content and form. Learning Outcomes 1. Knowledge & Understanding: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Demonstrate knowledge of current approaches in the merging of dance and technology to extend the boundaries of dance choreography and performance through identification of exemplars, and through personal exploration in the studio - Demonstrate understanding of and critically appraise the outcomes of such experiments through seminar discussion and prepared lecture-demonstration - Interrogate software packages used by researchers/artists/teachers to learn about the processes involved and to use this information to evaluate outcomes in different contexts – theatre, installations, on the web, in cyberspaces. 2. Skills: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Demonstrate capability to use digital media to artistic ends (for example, VCR editing) - Demonstrate capacity to use digital media for use as educational resources - Demonstrate presentation skills (lecture demonstration).
