DESCRIPTION The study-unit furnishes the student with fundamental knowledge about the world of illustration. It explores the students’ knowledge and skills in creating and communicating a story and focuses on the acquisition of skills, namely form and content, technique, material, composition and colour. Students will be required to develop and illustrate a story in order to explore issues of style, continuity and play between images. Students will be directed to focus on the reader’s perception and attention span. They will be encouraged to experiment with various techniques and materials, compositions and colour, while also focusing on the translation of ideas into images and illustrations.

Study-unit Aims:

- Lay the foundations of illustration practice;
- Give students the required skills in setting a style and experiencing drawing tools;
- Foster a culture of critical, self-reflection and peer evaluation.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- translate ideas into images;
- exploit story-telling techniques;
- implement complex stories visually;
- express narrative using visual techniques;
- understand the cultural contexts in which stories are visually transmitted.

2. Skills

By the end of the study-unit the student will be conversant with the process of translating ideas into images through experimentation with materials.
