Study-Unit Description

CODE DGA1013

TITLE Comparative Approaches to Art, Design and Visual Culture

UM LEVEL 01 - Year 1 in Modular Undergraduate Course

MQF LEVEL 5

ECTS CREDITS 4

DEPARTMENT Digital Arts

DESCRIPTION The study-unit presents a holistic and interdisciplinary approach through which it will be possible to analyse and understand the artistic movements of the twentieth century. The history of design, ranging from graphic design to fashion, from film to product design, will be confronted and linked with the coeval artistic and architectonic productions, in order to understand how the different creative sectors were, and still are, bound together.

For these reasons, the study-unit will garner together critical information from practices and disciplines from architecture, design, history of art, history of fashion, social theory, film and literature. This knowledge will be historically contextualized in order to evaluate social and cultural impact by the creative on society in general. The study-unit will therefore examine the avant-gardes of the beginning of the twentieth century (such as Futurism, Expressionism and Constructivism); the School of the Bauhaus and the De Stjil; Surrealism; Informel; Pop Art; and Postmodernism. A discussion of the latest contemporary trends will conclude the study-unit.
