Study-Unit Description

CODE DGA2013

TITLE Digital Animation Production (3D)

UM LEVEL 02 - Years 2, 3 in Modular Undergraduate Course

MQF LEVEL 5

ECTS CREDITS 6

DEPARTMENT Digital Arts

DESCRIPTION The study-unit focuses on enhancing students’ skills base and will give students a firm technical grounding in 3D digital animation production. It builds on the material covered by previous study units and will further elaborate several techniques and tools in used in a 3D environment. Students will explore modelling, modifiers, texturing, UV unwrapping, setting-up material shaders through nodes, keyframe animation, rendering and compositing. All these aspects will be covered in theory and practice. The 3D software in use will be the open-source Blender 3D. Other software used will be Adobe Photoshop and Adobe After Effects for texture preparation and compositing. Several other software will be mentioned for illustrative purposes but are not required. This study unit will set a solid theoretical and practical foundation for students to move on to more complex character development, movement and dynamic expression in DGA3010. The unit expands students’ knowledge of 3D animation through hands-on assignments, individual and group work. Tasks given will focus on building confidence and students completing this unit should leave with a good basic understanding of the several aspects and disciplines that feed into 3D production.

Study-unit Aims:

- To deepen students’ knowledge and skills in visual storytelling;
- To enhance students’ skills base in 3D animation;
- To enhance students’ production techniques;
- To channel students to find their own personal style;
- To foster a culture of critical, self-reflection and peer evaluation.

Learning Outcomes
