DESCRIPTION The study-unit introduces Interactivity as a field of contemporary art practice grounded within a new media art historical framework. It explores interactive media and the technologies used for artistic production and instruction, and the use of computers by artists covering the areas of graphics, sound, electronics and interactive programming. Through basic principles and hands-on practice, coupled with analytical and critical skills, the course also engages with the basic elements of interaction which include code, electronics and the variety of materials in use. Throughout the study-unit, students will bring to life self-generated, interactive prototypes and concepts using a mix of digital, interactive and electronic technologies.

Study-unit Aims:

• To train students to think critically about new media art and its design, and contemporary creative practice;
• To get students to understand the theory that underpins art created using new media and interactivity;
• To make students accustomed to the history of new media art and to key works by new media artists;
• To help students acquire basic technical skills in related software;
• To inform students on how to create a final project.
