DESCRIPTION This study-unit is an introductory module that covers the basic concepts of human anatomy and the function of its different structures. An emphasis will be made on the anatomy of the head and neck.

Furthermore the unit will discuss the relevant physiologic functions of the different anatomical structures and their application to patient management.

Study-unit Aims:

The study-unit aims at providing the Dental Assistant student with:

- The basic principles of human anatomy;
- A clear understanding of the structures of the head and neck;
- An insight into the functions of different anatomical structures.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

1. Describe the basic anatomical structures of the human body;
2. Discuss the general functions of the main organs in the human body;
3. Discuss the functions of the general anatomical structures including the blood supply, nerve supply and musculo-skeletal systems;
4. Describe the basic anatomical structures of the head and neck;
5. Discuss the basic function of the head and neck anatomical structures.

2. Skills:
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

1. Identify the anatomical structures of the human body;
2. Identify the general functions of the organs and tissues of the human body;
3. Identify the anatomical structures of the head and neck;
4. Identify the functions of the anatomical structures of the head and neck.
