DESCRIPTION This study-unit introduces students to the basic knowledge of common diseases in medicine and surgery and their mechanism, clinical features, management and prevention. The oral manifestations of these diseases will also be discussed.

DNS1608 also offers students an introduction to care in an emergency situation.

Study-unit Aims:

The study-unit aims at:

- Providing an introduction to diseases of the human body;
- Facilitating the understanding of the impact of disease on basic body function;
- Providing an understanding of oral manifestations of systemic disease;
- Providing knowledge of common medicines involved in treatment of medical diseases;
- Providing knowledge of basic life support;
- Providing an understanding of the assistant's role in an emergency situation;
- Providing a foundation for implementing a holistic approach to patient care.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Discuss common diseases of the human body;
- Understand the impact of systemic diseases on dental care;
- Discuss the oral manifestations of systemic diseases;
- Recognise common treatments involved in medical diseases;
- Describe basic life support and first aid;
- Discuss the roles and responsibilities of dental assistant practicing in various clinical and community settings.

2. Skills:
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- List common diseases of the human body;
- Describe the mechanism of common diseases and their effect on general well being;
- Explain the impact of medical diseases on oral health;
- List the oral manifestations of systemic diseases;
- Perform basic life support and first aid.
