DESCRIPTION | This study-unit shall introduce the student to the aspects of the treatment, prevention and education involved in the oral care of infants, children and adolescents. The broad nature of the work undertaken requiring a combination of medical, dental and communication skills shall be explored. Study-unit Aims: Dental Specialties For Dental Assistants 4 - Child Dental Health aims at: - Introducing those disciplines that are particular to Paediatric dentistry; - Highlighting the modifications to the other areas of general dental practice that are required when providing care to the child patient; - Providing the students with the theoretical knowledge necessary to allow them to offer the correct support to the Dental Health Care provider taking into consideration the age, and the physical, intellectual and emotional developmental stages of the patient. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: In terms of: 1. History taking, examination and treatment planning Discuss the importance of education, the promotion of comfort and the practice of less invasive procedures on the first visits for the child patient. 2. Psychological Development List the stages of intellectual development and the different temperaments of the child patient; List the methods of communication used based on knowledge of psychological principles and issues of growth and development. 3. Behaviour Management Identify the various methods of communicative/non-pharmacological and pharmacological methods available for allaying anxiety in the child patient. 4. Dental fear and avoidance Discuss the reality of the culture of fear that surrounds dental care; List the fears an adult patient, an abuse survivor and a child patient may have. 5. Non-accidental Injury Express the duty of care that any member of a health care team has towards all patients; List the classical pointers of non-accidental injury; Identify typical abusive lesions to the head and neck region. 6. Restorative Paediatric Dentistry Identify dental materials that are particular to the restoration of the primary dentition and the young permanent dentition; Identify those restorative procedures and techniques that are particular to Paediatric dentistry. 7. Trauma to the primary and permanent dentition Recall the examination protocols, investigations and treatment modalities carried out when treating a trauma patient. 8. Interdisciplinary care Recognise the role of Paediatric Dentistry in the multidisciplinary care of the paediatric patient in cases of orthodontic treatment and cleft lip/palate care. 2. Skills: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: In terms of: 1. History taking, examination and treatment planning Administer their role in introducing the child to the clinical environment, the staff and equipment while the operator discusses sensitive issues with the parent/guardian. 2. Psychological Development Practice effective communication skills and have appropriate expectations of behaviour of the child patient. 3. Behaviour Management Reproduce the practice of techniques that reduce fear related behaviour. 4. Dental fear and avoidance Implement a good dental team-patient relationship in order to reduce anxiety and promote cooperation through the management of fear related behaviour responses. 5. Non-accidental Injury Identify any signs of non-accidental injury or neglect and act by sharing their concern appropriately. 6. Restorative Paediatric Dentistry Prepare the operatory for paediatric restorative treatment; Offer the operator appropriate chair side support during paediatric restorative treatment. 7. Trauma to the primary and permanent dentition Prepare the operatory for management of traumatic dental injuries; Appropriately support the operator during management and treatment of traumatic dental injuries. 8. Interdisciplinary care Assist the operator in making arrangements for appropriate follow-up care; Cooperate with other members of the dental and wider healthcare team in the interests of patients.
