DESCRIPTION | This study-unit covers the general structure of the human head and neck and nervous system. In addition to lectures, students will be exposed anatomy demonstrations in the clinical anatomy, dissection and histology laboratories. During these sessions students are stimulated to perform specified tasks and guided as to what is expected of them through worksheets. Students will also be required to participate in regular case-based group discussions followed by in-depth analysis of the underlying scientific basis of common clinical conditions through facilitated Critical Thinking Sessions. These are based on carefully selected clinical cases that are intended to stimulate the student to think and discuss critically the presented problems and to formulate basic scientific and clinical concepts as well as ethical, behavioural and professional principles. The common features of these learning sessions is that they involve active participation, are student centered and conducive to independent learning as a prelude to continuing life-long education. Study-Unit Aims: This study-unit provides a sound knowledge of the Anatomy of the Head and Neck and Central Nervous System to the student dentist. It includes the histology and embryology of the relevant structures so as to allow them to understand the basis for developmental defects. It also includes important imaging knowledge of these structures. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: 1. Discuss the structure/function correlations in microscopic anatomy (histology) of glands and other structures of the Head and Neck, particularly of the oral cavity, as well as of the brain and spinal cord. 2. Outline the developmental processes relating to the formation of the Head and Neck and Central Nervous System (embryology). 3. Describe the detailed structure of the different parts of the Head and Neck. 4. Describe the detailed structure of the different parts of the CNS, in particular of the cranial nerves 2. Skills: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: 1. Identify relevant structures in histological slides and embryological specimens. 2. Identify gross anatomical head and neck and brain structures in cadaveric specimens 3. Identify head and neck and brain structures on imaging of different modalities. 4. Apply the knowledge of the anatomy of the head and neck and central nervous systems to relevant clinical case scenarios 5. Demonstrate how to examine the cranial nerves Main Text/s and any supplementary readings: Main Texts: Neuroanatomy Author/s: Alan R.
