| DESCRIPTION | The student is introduced to the theory regarding restorations including more than one unit. The various materials which are used in relation to different spans of restorations are covered. Also, the possibility of using special attachments and bridges constructed over cast cores will also be covered. Study-unit Aims The aim of this study-unit is to introduce the student to various types of bridges including the clincal indications and contraindications. An in depth understanding of each component part of bridges i.e. the retainers, pontics and connectors is considered. This will include an overview of clinical techniques for bridge construction. Learning Outcomes 1. Knowledge & Understanding: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - comprehend the principles of bridgework construction. - demonstrate an understanding of the use of attachments incorporated with bridgework. - demonstrate an understanding of the principles of bridge construction in terms of abutment to pontic tooth ratio. 2. Skills: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - design and construct both simple and complex bridges. - use spruing techniques for bridge work. - contruct bridges using wax or non residual acrylic. - use special attachments in dentistry.
