TITLE Child Dental Health and Orthodontics 1 - Clinical Practice

DESCRIPTION This study-unit gives the initial training and basic knowledge on the development of the dentition, diagnosis and management of dental disease and correction of growth anomalies in young patients. This study-unit is also a practical study-unit in which the student will develop the skills in phantom head and in the clinical setting.

Prior to commencing the clinical training, the student must complete and successfully prove dexterity in phantom head.

A Paediatric logbook will need to show the execution of a minimum:
- 8 fissure sealants
- 4 preventive resin restorations
- 2 Class II amalgam filling restorations
- 2 Class II composite resin restorations
- 1 pulpotomy in a primary molar
carried out clinically on child patients.

Study-unit Aims:

- Be able to diagnose orthodontic problems and formulate a basic treatment plan.
- Be able to construct a simple removable orthodontic appliance.
- Be able to manage simple techniques in paediatric and special needs patients.
- Carry out basic intra-coronal restorations in the child patient.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- Explain how to obtain and record a comprehensive medical, social, behavioral and dental history from a child patient/parent.
- Explain how to obtain and record information about diet, oral hygiene and other dental health related behaviours.
- Explain how to complete an extra and intra-oral examination.
- Discuss the use of radiographs.
- Describe methods of detection of dental disease in the child patient.
- Formulate a treatment plan for a child patient with due regard to the child’s social, psychological and physical development.
- Discuss treatment options for a child patient.
- Explain a treatment plan.
- Describe the principles of endodontic treatment techniques involved in the management of pathology of the pulp and peri-radicular tissues in the primary dentition.
- List the principles of local anaesthesia in paediatric dentistry.
- Explain the main medical disorders found in medically compromised child dental patients and the aspects of general medicine.
- Describe the physiological and anatomical mechanisms of tooth movement and principles of Orthodontic retention.
- List the principles of Orthodontic radiography including Cephalometry.
- Discuss the principles of Case Assessment, Appliance Design and Extraction Patterns.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- Carry out a thorough clinical examination of the child patient.
- Carry out a basic orthodontic examination.
- Show competency at interpreting a diet analysis sheet/diary to assist in treatment planning and the delivery of oral hygiene instruction.
- Demonstrate the necessary communication skills while simplifying the treatment plan.
- Properly select the appropriate materials in clinical practice.
- Use appropriate materials in clinical practice.
- Demonstrate simple interceptive techniques.
- Perform stainless steel crowns.
- Carry out the following procedures on models by the end of the First Semester:
    - 4 Fissure sealants (two upper molars and two lower molars)
    - 2 Preventive resin restorations
    - 2 Class II Cavity preps for a composite resin restoration on a primary molar
    - 1 Pulpotomy in a primary molar
    - 1 Pulpectomy in a primary molar
- Carry out the following procedures in the child patient by the end of the Second Semester:
    - 8 Fissure sealants
    - 4 Preventive resin restorations
    - 2 Class II amalgam filling restorations
    - 2 Class II composite resin restorations
    - 1 Pulpotomy in a primary molar carried out clinically on child patients.

ADDITIONAL NOTES A pass in this study-unit is required before registering for CDO4034 and DNS4036.

Co-requisite Study-unit: DNS3110

In order for students to be awarded an overall pass in the study-unit, they need to satisfy the following conditions:
• Produce six pieces of work prior to the Paediatrics Pre-clinical Practical Examination; and
• Obtain a pass in both Practical components.

Attendance to scheduled sessions, inclusive of lectures/tutorials, practical, laboratory and clinical components is compulsory. Students who do not attend at least 90% of the scheduled sessions will not be allowed to sit for any of the assessment components mentioned below.
