DESCRIPTION This study-unit covers the teaching in paediatric dentistry and orthodontics. It consists of formal lectures and the preparation of a case report in child dental health and a case report in orthodontics. Independent study time is also factored in.

Study-unit Aims:

The emphasis of this study-unit is to increase competence in the management of patients under the age of 16 years. Subjects taught will include preventive and interceptive procedures, paediatric oral medicine and surgery including cleft lip and palate cases and treatment of missing incisor cases.

This unit aims to teach the student the skills to prepare and deliver a presentation about a topic related to child dental health. The student shall be able to discuss the topic with peers. Further teaching includes orthodontic diagnosis, preventive techniques and management of malocclusions and treatment of emergency presentations.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

Child Dental Health

- Discuss the range of preventive/interceptive procedures in the orthodontic/paedodontic interface.
- Describe soft tissue lesions and disorders of the oral cavity in the child patient.
- Explain his/her diagnosis, aetiology, investigations required and management including when to refer.
- Explain the causes of infection, mechanisms and routes of spread of infection.
- Discuss the principles of management of infections in the head and neck region.
- Discuss pyogenic oral infections and indications for referral.
- List the functions of the dental surgeon in a multidisciplinary cleft lip/palate team.
- Design a treatment plan and management of a case of a missing central incisor in a child or adolescent incorporating consideration for their expected growth and development.

Orthodontics

- Discuss limited developmental or acquired dento-alveolar, growth-related and functional abnormalities of the primary, mixed and permanent dentition.
- Explain how to diagnose orthodontic treatment need.
- Explain contemporary treatment techniques.
- Explain how to design, insert and adjust space maintainers and design.
- Explain how to insert and adjust active removable appliances to move a single tooth or correct a crossbite.
- Explain how to treat simple crowded cases by means of extractions and tooth retraction.
- Discuss the principles of treatment of dento-facial anomalies including the common orthodontic/maxillofacial procedures involved.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- Describe dental anomalies together with their prevalence and management options.
- Identify the pertinent features in a child or adolescent relating to potential orthodontic problems.
- Restore primary and permanent teeth in a child patient.
- Discuss the presentation about a topic related to child dental health with an audience.
- Recognise and interpret orthodontic treatment need.
- Describe the design of space maintainers.
- Explain the mechanisms involved in the action of removable appliances to move a single tooth or correct a crossbite.
- Describe the treatment of simple crowded cases by means of extractions and tooth retraction.
- Describe the management of all forms of orthodontic emergency.

Co-requisite Study-unit: CDO4134

Attendance to scheduled sessions, inclusive of lectures/tutorials, practical, laboratory and clinical components is compulsory. Students who do not attend at least 90% of the scheduled sessions will not be allowed to sit for any of the assessment components mentioned below.

* Submission of the Clinical Report is compulsory.
