| DESCRIPTION | The course maps how social media can be integrated into different facets of a scholarly activity. The primary purpose is to help researchers navigate and use social media in a meaningful and strategic manner. The course will broadly engage with eight topics: 1. Introduction to the key characteristics of social media platforms 2. Using social media to publicise scholarly work 3. Using social media to build and nurture an online network 4. Using social media for academic research and the curation of information 5. Using social media for public engagement 6. Managing the dark side of social media 7. Managing a professional identity in the age of the attention economy 8. Communicating strategically online. The course will be delivered in an iterative manner. Participants will be encouraged to discuss specific areas of research interest within the context of the course topics. Outcomes: The course levers on the lecturer’s experience with social media platforms (since 2004) and ongoing research on the reflexive and disruptive relationship between new media, emerging technologies and society. Learning Outcomes: - Practical insights on the platforms to use for researchers; - Dealing with online information overload; - Conducting online research using social media platforms; - Communicating strategically. |
