DESCRIPTION This study-unit exposes the student to the practical aspects of orthodontic appliances. Students will construct removable orthodontic appliances, including myofunctional appliances, using different curing techniques. The student will master wire bending for the construction of various springs and retentive components, as well as soldering and welding techniques, used in orthodontic appliances.

Study-unit Aims:

The aims of this study-unit are:
- Introduce the student to wire bending techniques and the use of different pliers used for this kind of work.
- Construct orthodontic appliances including simple removable appliances and myofunctional appliances.
- Introduce the student to different curing techniques used in the construction of orthodontic appliances.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- Discuss and relate the relevant theoretical knowledge to the practical aspects of removable orthodontic appliance construction.
- Discuss the use of soldering and welding of stainless steel wire in appliance construction.
- Discuss the use of different type of screws in orthodontic appliance construction.
- Discuss the use of articulators and verticulators in orthodontics.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- Construct removable appliances.
- Construct myofunctional appliances.
- Carry out soldering and welding of stainless steel wire.
- Make use of different screws in orthodontic appliance construction.
- Use articulators and verticulators in orthodontics.

ADDITIONAL NOTES Attendance to scheduled sessions, inclusive of lectures/tutorials, practical, laboratory and clinical components is compulsory. Students who do not attend at least 90% of the scheduled sessions will not be allowed to sit for any of the assessment components mentioned below.
