| DESCRIPTION | This is an introductory study-unit to Implant Dentistry. The treatment options available to restore partially or fully edentate patients with tissue integrated prostheses will be explored. The theoretical basis of osseointegration will be discussed and will include basic science, material science and its role in management of patients missing single or multiple teeth. It will cover treatment planning in detail, whilst an overview of the clinical steps, that is the prosthetically driven planning, surgical intervention, prosthetic rehabilitation and maintenance will be provided. Students who do not attend at least 90% of the scheduled sessions will not be allowed to sit for any of the assessment components mentioned below. Study-Unit Aims: The aims of the study-unit are to: - Determine when conventional tooth or implants supported prostheses are indicated; - Communicate clearly the advantages and disadvantages of the various treatment options. In addition, students will be capable to include implant dentistry as part of their overall treatment plan; - Expose the student to the clinical steps in the planning and execution of implant-supported prostheses; - Be knowledgable in contemporary implant surfaces and their role in the understanding of the osseointegration process; - Understand the workflow in implant dentistry; - Communicate to the patient the importance of recall and post-treatment care when fixed prostheses are delivered. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Discuss the theoretical and practical aspects involved in implant dentistry; - Explain the importance of successful osseointegration; - Discuss the variety of implant loading protocols and techniques used; - Discuss the indications for implants treatment, considering the patient's oral health status and general medical condition, financial situation and expectations; - Discuss the role of occlusion in implant-supported prostheses; - Discuss the workflows in implant dentistry and subsequent maintenance of implant supported prostheses. 2. Skills: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Provide patients with treatment plans that include implant supported prostheses; - Identify edentulous spans for implant treatment and prescribe the appropriate dental imaging; - Identify the basic tools (e.g. drills, impression posts) used in implant dentistry; - Educate patients on the maintenance and care of implant supported prostheses; - Provide routine care of tissue integrated prostheses and simple maintenance; - Refer cases to the appropriate specialists in implant dentistry.
