DESCRIPTION | The study-unit aims to enable students to apply the theory and concepts covered in ECN2217 to study real world issues. The topics covered include: 1. Supply and demand I (US Sugar Program) 2. Supply and demand II (housing market and immigration) 3. Utility and choice (labour supply decisions) 4. Competitive and monopsonistic markets (minimum wage) 5. Market power and firm behaviour (competition policy) 6. Oligopoly (mergers) 7. Monopolistic competition (real estate prices) 8. Auctions (tax competition) Study-unit Aims: It aims to show students how individuals, businesses and public sector employees can use the analytical tools of microeconomics to analyse real world issues such as the imposition of a minimum wage or horizontal mergers. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: • Understand how the supply and demand framework can be applied to study real world issues; • Understand how the utility and choice framework can inform policy makers about the impact of policy on individuals’ decisions; • Understand how knowledge of different types of market structures can be utilised to gain insights about the functioning of markets. 2. Skills By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: • Enable students to apply microeconomics tools; and • Improve students' critical analysis skills. Textbook: • Hall, R.E. and Lieberman, M. (2012) Microeconomics: Principles and Applications, 6th Edition, South-Western Cengage Learning. • Varian, H.R. (2014). Intermediate Microeconomics: A modern approach, 9th Edition, WW Norton & Co. USA. Additional reading material will be provided throughout the course. |
