DESCRIPTION The study-unit is aimed at giving students an understanding of the effects of a single currency on the micro and macro level within society, on countries within Eurozone and on their trading partners outside of Eurozone. The consequences of a change-over to the Euro, on everyday decision-making by consumers, firms and governments will be considered.

Indicative list of topics to be covered:

- The international monetary system;
- Optimum currency areas and asymmetric shocks;
- Political and historical aspects of the European Monetary System;
- The EU institutional framework;
- The Maastricht Criteria and the Growth and Stability Pact;
- The role of the European Central Bank and the European System of Central Banks;
- Monetary and Fiscal Policies in Monetary Unions.
