UM LEVEL 01 - Year 1 in Modular Undergraduate Course

MQF LEVEL 5

DEPARTMENT Education Studies

DESCRIPTION Following an outline of various theories of development, students will be taken through the stages of childhood in early years and primary school age and different developmental areas in each stage will be discussed. This study-unit introduces students to aspects of the physical, social, emotional, moral and cognitive development of children throughout the primary years. Employing a holistic perspective, students will be exposed to some of the most important and relevant developmental theories and findings. This should help them become aware of the important processes involved as well as become sensitised to how, as primary school teachers, they can facilitate children’s healthy development and learning.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & understanding:
By the end of this study unit, students will:

• Have an understanding of the holistic development of the child, both in the years prior to schooling as well as in primary school;
• Be more sensitive to the complexity of environments surrounding children.

2. Skills:
By the end of the study-unit students will be able to:

• Read and interact critically with relevant texts and case studies;
• Reflect upon primary school curricula to facilitate later development and implementation of thecurriculum for children from birth to 11 years;
