DESCRIPTION This study-unit’s objective is to assist the students in developing critical pedagogical praxes for the on-going inclusive operations, within educational settings. The study-unit will be introducing students to the notion of inclusion as intrinsic educational praxes. Thus, a critical understanding of inclusive praxes will be explored to make a clear distinction between a charity model on inclusion and that of inclusive educational praxes. The later, will be the bases on which the study-unit will be formulating its educational ideals and praxes. The study-unit will be exploring different issues, topics, policies, theories and questions through which inclusion is engaged with as a central operation on which educational praxes are developed.

Study-unit Aims:

This study-unit aims to: at 'introducing' the student to:

- Introduce fundamental themes in education;
- Help students become critical of particular issues and practices in education and schooling;
- Provide students with an opportunity to develop their own voice and ideas about education and schooling;
- Engage students in the rich tradition of education theory in relation to particular themes and issues;
- Link the various theories to the practices that take place in school, through the weekly school observation tasks;
- Help students become reflective practitioners.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Demonstrate knowledge of various theoretical ideas related to each theme;
- Describe the various school practices that are related to each theme;
- Discuss a theme in-depth that links both theory and practices observed in schools;
- Give his/her own formed position on each theme.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Read philosophical and pedagogical texts and engage in deconstructing some of the ideas and concepts presented in the texts;
- Analyze educational text;
- Develop his/her voice as critical thinker.

Main Text/s and any supplementary readings:

A reader has been specifically written for this study-unit by members of the Department of Education Studies. On-line tasks are assigned to students on the seven themes. Each student will need to get his own copy from the Library.

Also education policies, which can be downloaded from the Directorate of Education website, will be used.
