| DESCRIPTION | This study-unit provides participants with an opportunity to widen and deepen their understanding of the socio-emotional development in childhood and adolescence and how it is related to students’ social and emotional competence and difficulties. Students will examine the nature and causes of social, emotional and behaviour difficulties in school. They will explore the major understandings of SEBD from various perspectives, including biological, psychological and social theories, and discuss the biopsychosocial, systemic perspective which integrates such theories within which SEBD may be explained and understood. Students will examine in detail how school and classroom related factors may prevent or contribute to social, emotional and behaviour difficulties. Learning Outcomes By the end of the study-unit participants should be able to: - appreciate the relationship between socio-emotional development in childhood and adolescence and student behaviour and behaviour difficulties in school - appreciate the complexity of SEBD and develop an integrated approach to the understanding of SEBD from various perspectives - underline how school related factors are related to SEBD - understand the behaviour of students with SEBD and the needs of such students Tentative Study-unit Outline - socio-emotional development in children and adolescence - influences on children’s socio-emotional development; risk and protective factors - relation between socio-emotional development and behaviour in school - the nature and prevalence of social, emotional and behaviour difficulties in school - biological, psychological and social influences on children and young persons’ behaviour - school related factors and SEBD - the biopsychological perspective to SEBD Reading List Recommended texts: - Clough, P., Garner, P., Pardeck, J.P. & Yuen, F.
