| DESCRIPTION | The continuous development and consolidation of personal skills is an essential element for effective educational leaders. The areas covered in this component are intended to make the participants aware of the necessary skills when managing educational institutions. The method of learning is experiential and seeks the self empowerment of the individual. The emphasis is on learning skills and not learning about them. The sessions will start off by exploring experiential learning and methods of assessment; provide opportunities to develop trust and group building. There will be communication and listening assertiveness training and in the area of conflict management. Opportunities to give and receive feedback will be provided. Study-unit Aims: The study-unit aims to foster the self awareness and self acceptance of course participants and to develop the various aspects of inter/interpersonal communication. The unit aims to develop trust in the group which will facilitate the experiential learning of skills that contribute to a more resilient self and that foster effective communication. The unit also aims to impart basic theoretical understanding of basic concepts utilised in the study of intrapersonal and interpersonal communication. However, the theoretical aim is secondary to the experiental dimension. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - demonstrate a clear understanding of the complexity on intrapersonal and interpersonal adaptive functioning; - demonstrate a clear understanding of the concepts used to explain intrapersonal and interpersonal adaptive functioning; - make use of the skills learnt to real school/ College situations; - understand the value of reflexivity. 2. Skills: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - handle trust building situations; - fine tune his/her communication and listening skills; - make assertiveness techniques; - handle negative emotions in specific situations; - use conflict resolution techniques; - explore and express empathy to different stakeholders.
